One Way to Ensure That You “Win By a Nose” (or more)
When trying to hire top talent, we must remember that the best candidates almost always have other options. To avoid being their second choice, invest a little extra time and effort in the details. For example, ask permission to have an informal conversation with the candidate’s spouse. This will serve two purposes, both of which will increase your chances of securing the candidate. First, since the candidate’s spouse almost always has influence over the decision, this will give you a chance to “sell” her/him (albeit subtly), and may provide another way to find out what factors are really most important in the decision. Second, if handled in the right way, it will communicate concern about the candidate and your desire for a strong fit. You have much to gain by incorporating this simple step in the hiring process.
